Introduction to a Free Spirit

A little bit about me ❤️

My name is Shary Bouvette, and I am a junior here at The University of Oklahoma. It almost doesn't even seem real saying that— a junior! It feels like just yesterday, I was that scared little freshman entering those dorms. As time as gone by (and way too fast), I have learned to value an important piece of advice my dad gave me on a letter sending me off to college: "Most importantly, be unapologetically yourself. Because before you know it, these college days will be over, and you will regret being anything other than that." Reading it then, time didn't seem like a big deal, but now that I'm over halfway done with my undergraduate journey, this was exactly what I needed to slow down, enjoy the ride, and embrace who I am.
It's ME!, personal image

By now, I'm sure you've caught on that I am close to my dad (Chris)— him and my entire family. I also have a beautiful mother (Kim) and two, way less beautiful, brothers (Adam & Max).

I am the only girl, stuck in the middle of two boys, which means I have an army to protect and keep an eye on me. Adam, the older one, is 23 years old and is a medical student in Oklahoma City. Max is 18 years old which means he just started his freshman year here at OU! Living with a sibling here in Norman makes it feel even more like another home away from home.

My favorite people, personal image

And my home? I was born and raised in Edmond, north of Oklahoma City. When together, my family loves to have game nights consisting of every card and board game known to man. The competitive blood in our bodies makes for loud and very entertaining nights. We also love to travel all around the world. I find nature takes me to peaceful state of mind, and someday, I hope to check all 58 national parks in this country off my list. I am over halfway there!

At OU, I am studying chemical biosciences hoping to pursue medicine. I am passionate about health care, and I want to make an impact on people's lives by prolonging and maximizing individuals' health. When not studying, I also love being involved in The Big Event and orchestra. I have played the violin since I was 4 years old, so music has always been a huge comfort in my life. And as my friends know, music is always playing from my signature Spotify playlists on shuffle.

Welp, that is where I am right now, but we will see all where this new semester takes me. Last semester I took the Mythology and Folklore class, and I am super excited to continue to improve my blogging and writing skills into the world of Indian Epics.

  1. Hi Shary! As a senior at OU, I feel you. I'm from Arizona, and it feels like I just moved here but now I'm on the brink of graduating and boy I am not ready for the real world. I really like how close you are to your family, the competitive board game nights are definitely relatable to my family. :) I often wish I could see my family more, so it's nice to have a home away from home.

  2. Hi Shary! I am also a junior here at OU and totally agree with you that the time has flown by since freshman year. What is it like to have brothers? In my siblings, it is just me and my older sister, but I have always wanted a brother (older or younger). I am pretty close with my cousins that live in the same city as me but I feel like an actual brother would be way different. I am also pursuing a medical career but I want to do PA (physician's assistant). Hope you have a good semester!

  3. Hi Shary– I hope you really enjoy your junior year! It can be a challenging one, but I'm sure it's fun to finally be an upperclassmen. I have two siblings as well, although we are flipped (I've got two sisters), and they look after me too. It must be great to have an older sibling who is already a part of the field you want to go into. It's so cool that you've been playing the violin since you were so young! I didn't know that OU had an orchestra– I will have to check it out.

  4. Hello Sherry, it's nice to meet another student who wants to get into the medical field and I know it can be really tough so I wish you all the luck. Also, that's great you have your brother so close. I imagine it must be fun being at college with your brother, I know I miss my siblings when I'm away from them for long. Good luck this semester!

  6. Hi, Shary!

I absolutely loveddddd your introductory paragraph! I think that with going to college and starting new things and learning about yourself, your likes and interests, what you're good at and maybe not-so good at, it's important to still always stay true to who you are. Also, with you being the only girl, it kind of shows me what my brother may feel like being surround by 6 sisters! haha.

  7. And here I am, finally getting around to your introduction, Shary! It is always so nice meeting somehow a second time so now I can read the introduction in terms of an actual person I know instead of a person-I-will-get-to-know as the semester goes on. And yay for card games and board games. Here's a fun fact: a student who took these courses a gazillion years ago (I think he graduated in 2004?) is now a board game designer, and he has definitely put his storytelling skills to work in designing board games; here is his company: Foxtrot Games. They just did a new Kickstarter this year. Maybe you will give Twine a try this semester and make some kind of game-based story, or learn how to use Twine just for fun. The world needs all the games we can make! Yay games! Yay stories! :-)
And now I think I need to go make a coffee (there is a beautiful cappuccino image calling out to me in a photo below the comment box ha ha). Yay coffee!

  8. Hey Shary! Just now getting around to your intro after reading your first story, but it's great to thee who's behind the words. I actually spend a lot of time up in Edmond and Arcadia visiting my girlfriend's family and it sounds a lot like how you spend your time with yours! Lots of board games and family fun. I hope your pursuits in health care will be able to help our generation as we grow up into the adult life and are starting to learn some of the harsh realities of health care as it stands.

  9. Hey Shary! Your dad seems very wise. And tell me about it, being a senior in college is even more weird than being a junior. High school doesn't seem so far away! Your family seems so close; that is awesome you have such great support. It's also pretty neat that you and your little brother are at OU together; I currently live with my brother, who is a graduate student at OU. That's pretty amazing that you can play the violin. It seems like such a technical instrument to learn, and the sound is so pretty. I hope you continue to take your dad's advice, and soak up your last few years at OU! Best of luck, and I look forward to reading more of your stories.

  10. Hello Shary!
It’s a pleasure working alongside you in this course work! I, like you, am a native Oklahoman, and I too am looking to pursue a career into medicine! I can’t say I have any older siblings so I can’t relate much in that department, but I have been very intertwined with a life-long obsession of music! I learned to play classical guitar and have always enjoyed it, so I can comfortably claim some musical foundation. I’m very impressed that you’ve been able to visit so many national park. I can’t fathom how much time that must’ve taken and now I feel like maybe I need to step out and adventure into some of these parks! Thanks for sharing a snippet of your story!

  11. Hi Shary!

I'm also a junior Pre-medical student here! I'm majoring in Biochem. My brother is actually studying pharmacy at OU pharm. I have to say... your dad is very wise! I feel like being a pre med student doesn't really give us much time to breath; there is always something we need to be working on to build our app up! I used to play the violin when I was younger, and I wish I kept going, it's a really beautiful instrument. Good luck on all of your future endeavors!

  12. Hi Shary,

I loved getting to read a bit more about you. I think it is so true the mindset you have given yourself for college because I agree. It is so important to be unapologetically yourself in a world where there is so much judgment for no reason. Also, I totally agree with where has time gone, I also feel like I was just a freshman. Good luck in the rest of class!

  13. I am also a junior. I feel the same way! I feel like a freshman still. That is so sweet that you feel like you have an army of family to protect you. My boyfriend has 4 older brothers and they are super protective of me and I only have 1 sister, so it is cool feeling like I have so many more siblings now. I am also from Edmond. That is cool that your family plays board games together. I do play them with my friends though! I am PA so YAY health care!!

  14. Hey Shary! I enjoyed getting to know you through your blog! I am a senior who is about to graduate so I get it when you say it feels like yesterday when you moved into the dorms. Time really flies by and I am going to miss Norman and all the memories that I made here. I am super jealous that you have family in Norman. That must be great getting to see them frequently. Best of luck the rest of this semester!

  15. Hi Shary, nice to meet you!! As an outgoing senior you had their graduation taken away, I wanna emphasize to you to enjoy next year!! I know you mention that it was crazy fast that you're now a junior, but trust me, senior year is a big blur, so I hope you take full advantage of it! I think it's great that you want to pursue a career in medicine and having your brother in medical school, I can see the passion to help others lays in your family! I wish you the best of luck!

  16. Hi Shary,
I loved your picture underneath that giant overhanging boulder. I am also a huge fan of national parks. Last summer my wife and I got visit Yosemite, Death Valley, the Redwoods, and the Arches all in a few week span. It was the best time of my life! I am so looking forward to going back and exploring more, as well as visiting all the other national parks one day. Have you ever tried rock climbing? Although it can be dangerous, if you love the outdoors and especially the solidarity in it, you might find it as amazing as I do. It definitely allows you to get the best views!
